A magazine, an art gallery and a collection of gowns had a baby, and it was called A Night of Fashion at the Art Gallery. Internationally, it isn't uncommon to see models stomp the floors of prestigious art galleries, but in South Australia, the night was groundbreaking for the local industry.

Locals would be familiar with the tight young pack of dressmakers who showed: Paolo Sebastian, Jaimie Sortino and Couture + Love + Madness — the last of whom especially is consistently showing signs of improvement each season. From Sydney came current season Willow, Carla Zampatti, Bianca Spender and Scanlan & Theodore, who seemed to go the way of the interstate designers at Fashion Avenue by showing safe, unremarkable collections. Perhaps it's another case of catering to the perceived tastes of Adelaide buyers.

But if anyone would know about catering to locals, it's the city's highest end boutique, The New Guard, and its vintage equivalent, Claire Inc. Unlike their interstate peers, they held back no styling whim, sending loud prints and slogan tees down the catwalk.

Must Adelaide continue to deal with condescendingly edited collections sent from Sydney? Are locals just too conservative for an undiluted dose of high fashion? If you asked Belinda, stylist/buyer/owner of Claire Inc, she'd probably say something along the lines of (Moschi)no.

There's a difference between dresses and frocks. Dresses are born of necessity; frocks are children of whim. Dresses are to be ironed and starched; frocks are to be flicked and twirled. Hitch up your frock  and climb the fence that is begging you to smell its paddocks, but don't you dare rip your dress. Dresses  have a place in my wardrobe, but frocks have a place in my heart.

Don't murder me for not posting fashion images, but these girls were to beautiful not to share. Take a few friends and go somewhere you've never been before. The unfamiliar trails may hold just what you need to furnish your heart with joy for a few weeks yet.

A few years ago, I owned a pair of trackies for a few months. It was an unfortunate venture into the realm of sartorial comfort. I've since moved on from the grey marle, but not from the feeling of bringing home wherever your pants are. I've found a new lazy fabric, its secret in its ability to fool the general public into thinking you're not slouching on the inside. It's made for Friday nights that float the sounds of Mos Def and the taste of Vale Ale. And the best thing? You don't have to engage in outrageous online bidding battles over Isabel Marant to get a high quality pair.

Thanks to Riders by Lee for the (super comfy) jeans, $120 at The Iconic.

Denim shorts carry with them the flavour of summer, and with summer, feathers and bracelets and loose blonde locks. Thanks to Riders by Lee for sending me a ray of sunshine from their upcoming summer collection available online now, and to Love of Eos for the top and necklace. Love of Eos are currently offering first-timers 10% off everything if you're keen for a spring bargain.

Fashion Avenue 2012, Adelaide

In a sea of trustworthy designs focused on high profit margins and fast production turnaround, the truly inspired artists stand out. So it's easy to see why of the interstate designers brought to Fashion Avenue 2012, Camilla was a clear highlight. Her firework of a collection added Sydney sheen to a Brazilian flamboyance, mixing boomerang necklaces with bright feathers and prints. You didn't know where to start looking, not because everything was wrong, but because it was so perfect.

Joining Camilla on the print path were Lisa Ho and Gorman, with fun but wearable pieces currently available in stores. Meanwhile Alannah Hill and Alex Perry, who can usually be trusted for beautiful - albeit frou frou - frocks, seemed to dampen their ranges for the Adelaide market. Lucette, Joveeba and Tigerlily didn't break any ground, although Tigerlily included some high-waisted bikinis I couldn't help but appreciate. (I've previously declared my love for the navel hiders.)
